Australia has implemented a comprehensive national gene technology regulatory system, which is recognised as one of the most stringent regulatory systems for biotechnology in the world. The Federal Gene Technology Act 2000, which came into force on 21 June 2001, underpins the system. Federal, State and Local Government agencies all have responsibilities in the national regulatory framework, with four lead agencies taking prime responsibility for the regulation of agricultural biotechnology.
