In 2003 Roundup Ready canola was found to be as safe as conventional canola and approved for commercial release by the Australian Federal Regulator http://www.ogtr.gov.au/ir/dir020.htm. However 2008 will be the first year Australian farmers will have the choice to plant Roundup Ready canola, with the Victorian and New South Wales Governments both removing their bans on the cultivation of GM canola.
Monsanto has licensed three seed companies to incorporate the Roundup Ready trait into their local canola varieties – Nuseed, Pioneer Hi-Bred Australia and Pacific Seeds. 2008 will see the limited commercial release of these varieties across a small number of hectares and growers.
