Health & Safety

The safety of Roundup Ready® canola for human health, safety and the environment has been confirmed by all the appropriate federal regulatory agencies in Australia.

Food Health & Safety
Extensive analysis is conducted on every food derived from transgenic crops to ensure it is as safe to eat as its traditionally bred counterpart.

Assessment focuses on the safety of the proteins that are derived from the newly inserted genes. The history of use and consumption of the protein or related proteins is evaluated, and how the protein acts is assessed. Safety studies are then conducted using large quantities of the protein. These studies include nutritional analysis, digestibility, toxicity and allergenicity tests.

The nutritional and safety characteristics of food from transgenic crops are compared with their conventionally grown counterparts. Tests are conducted on up to 100 different components of the crops, grown under a range of environmental conditions, to ensure the safety characteristics of the food are the same.

The oil from Roundup Ready canola has been independently assessed as being as safe as conventional canola for human consumption. The full risk assessment is available on the FSANZ website.

Environmental Health & Safety
The OGTR assesses the environmental impact of any crop derived from gene technology to ensure there are no risks that it will become a weed, outcross to weedy species, or have any negative impact on other plants, animals or the soil.

Roundup Ready canola was found to be as safe for the environment as conventional canola. The full risk assessment completed by the OGTR is available on their website.
