Roundup Ready® canola is a herbicide tolerant canola. It has been modified using gene technology to tolerate glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup® agricultural herbicides. Roundup Ready canola enables farmers to safely and effectively manage weeds in their canola crop.
Roundup Ready canola is like other canola. It’s nutritional qualities and food safety are equivalent to conventional canola. In a paddock, it looks the same as other canola. With the exception of glyphosate based herbicides (such as Roundup) unwanted plants can be effectively controlled with the same herbicides as conventional canola.
Development of Roundup Ready canola began in the 1980’s. Canadian farmers first used the Roundup Ready system on a small scale in 1995. Since then it has grown to become their most popular weed control choice.
In Australia, an extensive trial program has been conducted since 1997 and in 2003 Roundup Ready canola was determined to be as safe as conventional canola for human health, safety and the environment by the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (the independent Australian government regulator). However, moratoria in the major canola growing States prevent any commercial crops being grown.
