Robust weed control has always been crucial to growing a successful canola crop. Roundup Ready® canola is no different.
To ensure Roundup Ready canola growers get the best results from Roundup Ready herbicide there are some key factors that need to be considered.

Roundup Ready canola has a flexible application window, enabling growers to apply Roundup Ready herbicide from crop emergence to the 6-leaf stage or prior to bud formation
Two applications can be made provided they are at least 14 days apart and the canola has two new leaves of growth
Before application, ensure that there is at least one true leaf for broadleaf weeds and two leaves for grasses
Assess the weed pressure in your paddock early to decide whether to use a one or two spray strategy
The most robust weed control is achieved using a two spray strategy. It is important that the first application is made between cotyledon and the two leaf stage. This provides sufficient time to make the second application either 14 days or two new leaves of growth after the first spray.
As canola grows rapidly in the early stages, it is important to target the four leaf stage for the second application of Roundup Ready herbicide. This makes allowance for unfavorable spraying conditions and provides sufficient time to make the application prior to bud formation.
Roundup Ready herbicide must be applied at 0.9kg/ha.
Up to two applications can be made per season over-the-top of Roundup Ready canola.
Roundup Ready herbicide has its own unique adjuvant system, so no additional surfactant is required.
Spraymate® Liase is the ONLY registered tank mix for Roundup Ready herbicide.
If required, add 2 litres of Spraymate Liase per 100 litres of spray solution to manage the adverse effects of high levels of calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate ions.
Ensure that target weeds are actively growing and not exhibiting any symptoms of environmental stress.
Moisture and temperature (frosts) stress can significantly reduce the level of weed control. Monitor conditions both before and after the herbicide application.
Boom Decontamination |
Be aware of potential contamination of spray application equipment including mixing stations. Ensure all equipment is thoroughly cleaned and free of residues, particularly after using sulfonylurea (SU) herbicides. Use chlorine and triple rinse after using SU herbicides. |
Water Rate (Ground) |
Use 50 – 80 litres per hectare. |
Boom Settings |
Select a suitable boom height and operating speed. |
Spray Quality |
Select nozzle and pressure settings to deliver a COARSE spray quality. This will reduce, but not eliminate, the level of driftable fines, therefore reducing the risk of off target deposition. |
Spray Conditions |
Check wind speed, direction and Delta T to ensure suitable spray conditions. Delta T needs to be between 2 and 8. Check for emerging cereal crops in paddocks surrounding as they will be very sensitive. Do not spray during inversion conditions. |
To maximise the value of Roundup Ready herbicide applications and minimise off target deposition, Nufarm have developed a number of information and decision making tools:
