The Sydney basin was introduced to the pre-commercialization launch of the Malinche indeterminate Roma Tomato at a field day held at Rossmore on 1 December 2010.
Malinche was first trialed in 2009 with over fifty thousand seed samples sent for on farm trialing. The early trials showed fruit and vine that exhibited great commercial attributes and type. The fruit was smooth, plum shaped, with small stem scaring, good firmness and resilience to pathogens.
A commercial trial was set up at Joe Boustani’s property at Rossmore, comparing two verities side by side, Malinche and a leading competitive variety in the region. The day was supported by distributors and around thirty local growers. Growers and distributors were impressed that Malinche delivers earliness in maturity, uniformity, good fruit colour, high marketable yield and excellent flavour.
Malinche has a features uniform trusses with fruit around 130grams in weight. Its high marketable yield is a result of its outstanding fruit size uniformity within each truss and consistency of size throughout its entire production. The fruit is dark red in colour with little to no nipple present.
The competing variety showed advanced level of infection of Grey Leaf Mould (Stemphylium Solani), as compared to the Malinche. Malinche exhibits resistance traits to the major viral diseases including TSWV (Tomato Spotted wilt virus) and TMV (Tomato Mosaic Virus).
