Mark Wandel planted a total of 900ha of Roundup ready canola in 2010. He identifies Group A resistance and the potential for better weed control as key reasons for using the technology this year.
“Overall, I was very impressed with the system. Both Roundup Ready herbicide applications cleaned weeds up exceptionally well and I am confident in the increased yield potential of particularly the hybrid varieties” Mark says. “The weed control in our hybrid varieties was very good, the open pollinated canola did have a third germination in the waterlogged areas where the crop was more open, so you can really see how important it is to have a vigorous, competitive crop with this system.”
“As growers we will need consistently higher yields with Roundup Ready canola to cover the higher cost of the system, so more work needs to be done to keep bringing higher yielding varieties through but I am confident we can achieve this” he says.
Whilst canola harvest has not yet begun, Mark’s expectations for yield range from 1.6t/ha on his open pollinated varieties and up to 2t/ha and above on his hybrid canola. “The yield potential looks good with the Roundup Ready, so based on what we have seen so far I think the majority of my canola will be Roundup Ready next year”.
