(Wednesday 19 November, 2008) — GM canola grower Emma Scholz has nurtured her crop with the care and discipline you would show a child. A veterinarian by profession, she has been the driving force of her family's farm this season as her husband Murray travelled overseas on his Nuffield Study scholarship. "We grew 70ha of Pioneer hybrid 46Y20RR and 50ha of Pacific Seeds hybrid M8265 this year; so far we have stripped the 46Y20 and delivered around 83 tonne to Lockhart.
We have been pleased with the early establishment and growth of the Roundup Ready® varieties. The yields of what we have harvested are around 1.2 T/ha. This is good considering it was a relatively low growing season due to low rainfall with a dry finish."
Emma is happy with the results, and also happy with the in-crop weed control. She attended Monsanto's Roundup Ready canola Stewardship Course as part of the process.
"I found the stewardship course to be very informative and useful, and the technical manual a valuable resource that we could refer to when needed. It is important that growers realise that Roundup ready technology is another tool to be used for weed management, and it is in all of our interests to use it responsibly. The Paddock Risk Assessment Management Option Guide (PRAMOG) is an easy to use tool to assess which paddocks are suitable for a Roundup Ready crop, and what other Integrated Weed Management techniques should be used."
"For us, Roundup Ready canola offers effective in crop weed control for our no-till system, with the ability to dry sow without a pre-sowing knockdown if the autumn break is late. If the net profits prove to be there, and the varieties perform well when compared to those we have been using, then we will continue to use the technology," she said.
