Alwyn Dyer harvesting GM canola
(Tuesday 25 November, 2008) — Alwyn Dyer, GM canola grower from Victoria says he's seen the Roundup Ready® crops out yield the TT varieties this season.
"The GM crops have been returning 1.2-1.5 tonne to the hectare. This is an excellent result despite a difficult season due to the drought conditions," Mr Dyer said.
Alwyn is unfazed by the climate challenges and when quizzed about growing more GM canola next year he replied, "Absolutely!"
He believes there will be a huge uptake next year with perhaps a 10-20 fold increase in GM canola growers.
"I'll be doing whatever I can to get the Roundup Ready in the ground next season. Our poorest GM crop yielded as much as our best yielding TT canola crop. At this stage I could see no reason why we would be growing TT canola again."
