GM canola — delivering choice

(Wednesday 10 December, 2008) — Contract grain hauler, Damien Everhard from Rowsley’s Claytrans was the first driver to deliver GM canola into a silo in Victoria. Delivering 70 tonne of Roundup Ready canola for Graham Dawson to the Tatyoon silo, Damien says the system was clear cut for both the grower and the driver.

“The driver declaration cards were very handy, straight forward and an easy system to follow. The grower knows what they’re harvesting; so come pick up time, contractors, like me, are given a declaration card and know exactly where to deliver their load.”

“Even though this was the first load of GM canola into the silo, the process was good and the site was clean. It was just like delivering any other canola or any other grain.”

One of the specifications of the driver declaration cards is for drivers to thoroughly clean out their truck bodies before and after each load. This enables Industry Standards for GM and non-GM canola segregation to be met.

Mr Everhard said, “We make sure our trucks are clean so there are no mixing concerns. We wash, broom and thoroughly cleanout our truck bodies after each load. We do this after every delivery of any grain, so it’s just another canola delivery for us.”

This system has made it easy for growers to deliver a choice of grains to silo sites throughout Victoria and NSW without the concern of mixing.
