PERTH, AUSTRALIA, Monday 3 August 2009 — Monsanto Australia is hosting Roundup Ready canola field days across Western Australia during August. The four field days will highlight the technology in the paddock and show farmers the weed control benefits and crop vigour of the Roundup Ready system.
Tony May, Canola Business Lead, Monsanto Australia Ltd, says there has been tremendous interest in the field days so far, with farmers keen to view the technology themselves.
“Hundreds of farmers have registered to attend these events and past experience has shown that farmers are keen to witness the technology for themselves first-hand in the field. These events offer the perfect environment for farmers to talk to those that have been able to grow Roundup Ready canola as part of the WA trial.”
Field days are planned for Wednesday August 5 at Cunderdin, Mt Barker on Friday 7 August, Esperance on Tuesday 11 August and Geraldton on Friday 14 August. Attendees will hear from technical specialists and representatives from the WA grains and oilseeds industry as well as participate in field walks to view the trials first hand.
Tony May said, “While the majority of trial sites are looking great, some sites were affected by poor rainfall at the start of the season. One of the R&D sites, at Wongan Hills, will be discontinued due to a patchy plant stand resulting from insufficient rainfall at planting. Fortunately, all other sites are out of danger and are looking good and the crops will be monitored for performance for the rest of the season until harvest.”
“Farmers around the world have embraced this technology across a range of crops. Monsanto is committed to sustainable agriculture and farmers who grow Roundup Ready canola enjoy the benefits of higher yields, better weed control and reduced reliance on residual herbicides. It’s important for WA farmers to view the technology for themselves and make their own choices.”
41,000 hectares of Roundup Ready canola have been planted throughout Victoria and New South Wales so far in 2009. That’s around 600 paddocks across the two States - representing more than a four-fold increase over last year’s planted area.
