MELBOURNE AUSTRALIA, 17 August 2009 — Monsanto Company (NYSE: MON) announced today that it has decided to exit its Deltapine cottonseed business in Australia.
Monsanto has recently completed a strategic review of its entire business in Australia. As a result of this review Monsanto will immediately exit the Deltapine cottonseed brand, but will continue to support growers who have purchased Deltapine varieties for the 2009-2010 season.
The company will, however, continue with a more focused cotton breeding operation in Australia as part of its global breeding program. It also retains the right to return to the Australian market in the future should conditions support that approach.
“We believe that Monsanto can create the most value for Australian growers by focusing on its advanced generation traits such as Bollgard II®/Roundup Ready Flex® cotton and Roundup
Ready® canola, and on continuing to invest in the next generation of innovative cotton and canola traits,” said Peter O’Keeffe, Monsanto Australia Country Lead.
Mr O’Keeffe continued, “By focusing on our trait business, we will be able to deliver an even stronger focus on stewardship and increase our support of the technical needs of our customers.”
Monsanto is committed to its technology development efforts for the cotton and grains industries in Australia. “The future for Australian agriculture looks bright and we fully expect to be part of that success story,” Mr O’Keeffe concluded.
This arrangement is effective as of September 1, 2009.
