Roundup Ready® canola is a herbicide tolerant canola modified using gene technology to tolerate glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup® agricultural herbicides. Roundup Ready canola is an environmentally sound production system that enables farmers to safely and effectively manage weeds in their canola crop.
In 2003 Roundup Ready canola was found to be as safe as conventional canola and approved for commercial release by the Australian Federal Regulator.
In 2008 the Victorian and New South Wales State governments gave growers the choice to grow Roundup Ready canola technology. In 2010 the Western Australian government announced it would allow WA growers to cultivate biotech canola – giving them real choice in their canola cropping systems.
There are currently restrictions prohibiting the cultivation of GM canola in the Australian Capital Terriroty, South Australia and Tasmania.
Monsanto licences four seed companies who sell canola seed containing Roundup Ready technology.
