Our second commitment is to help farmers conserve more in order to protect vital natural resources.
Specifically, we will help them reduce the aggregate use of land, irrigation water and energy by 1/3 per unit of output by 2030 vs. year 2000 levels.
That’s globally. What about in Australia?
Current contributions:
Reduced the environmental impact of cotton enabling an overall decrease in the amount of pesticide used
Since the introduction of INGARD cotton in 1996, and the progression to Bollgard II, cotton growers have been able to reduce pesticide usage by 85%.
Through our Roundup tolerant products we’ve also helped growers reduce their reliance on more persistent herbicides, which have been attributed to the contamination of our precious waterways.
With Bollgard II cotton growers can successfully implement Integrated Pest Management (IPM) systems to controls harmful pests while leaving beneficial insects alive and improving in crop biodiversity.
Monsanto’s Roundup Ready technology supports no-till farming operations to conserve soil moisture and fuel from tractor usage.
Future contributions:
Monsanto is working on the development of new Water Use Efficiency (WUE) and Nitrogen Use Efficiency (NUE) traits which aim to significantly conserve water and nitrogen use.
