Sustainable Agriculture

Tomorrow’s challenge – can we help?

By 2050, United Nations’ experts say our planet must produce enough to feed and clothe an anticipated population of 9.3 billion people. Factor in the predicted challenges of pressured water supplies, an energy-supply crunch and climate change and suddenly the problem is compounded.

Looking for solutions, Monsanto has been talking with a wide variety of stakeholders – employees, customers, investors, non-governmental organizations, policy makers and others – about how we might best contribute to global sustainability. What we heard overwhelmingly was to do what we do best – and that’s help farmers improve yield and simultaneously conserve more. Produce more, conserve more and improve farmers’ lives.

By 2030, Monsanto globally commits to help farmers produce more and conserve more by:

  • Developing improved seeds and traits that help farmers double yields from 2000 levels for corn, canola, soybeans and cotton, with a $10 million grant also pledged to improve wheat and rice yields globally.

  • Conserving resources through developing seeds and traits that use one-third fewer key resources per unit of output to grow crops while working to lessen habitat loss and improve water quality.

  • Helping improve the lives of all farmers who use our products, including an additional five million people in resource-poor farm families by 2020. And specifically in Australia, support the long term viability of rural communities for future generations.
